StartQuest aka Space Crusade
StarQuest
StarQuest (Space Crusades) is an adventure board game designed by Steven Baker and produced by Milton Bradley and Games Workshop in the UK. It is in many ways the Sci-Fi version of HeroQuest. First made in 1990, it uses many of the concepts of the Games Workshop's Space Hulk and Warhammer 40,000 games, but has a simpler level of game play. StarQuest's (Space Crusades') less sophisticated level of play removes much of the complexity of the all encompassing Warhammer 40K rule sets and allows players of all ages to just have some fun gaming without having to read and abide by an encyclopedia of rules. Because of this many players from different continents have adopted StarQuest (Space Crusades) rules as the basis of their own home brewed Warhammer 40K universe game rules.
In Germany, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands, this game is known as StarQuest. It was know as Space Crusade in the UK, Finland, Ireland, France, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand. It was never sold in North America by Games Workshop.
The theme of the game involves 1-3 squads of Imperium Space Marines breaching the hull of a space craft filled with aliens. The Space Marines must then fight off the aliens, attempt to complete a specific primary and secondary objective and then make it out alive. The player on the alien side's objective is to kill as many Space Marines as possible and raise hell. The one with the most point (generally the most kills) wins. As much of the game is left to chance and the throw of the dice, a player can be invincible and racking out an enemy body count one moment and then running in fear the next.
All in all, it is one of the simplest, most fun and violent board games ever made. Unfortunately, it isn't made anymore and the few copies of the game left are horded by a few collectors and can sell for US$500. But if you are lucky, you may be able to find a set in a thrift store..in the UK or Germany. You can also custom make your own boards, find some ork and marines miniatures and borrow a copy of the rule book and you'll be on your way to playing a really fun board game!
Game Play
Game play is similar to many of the tabletop skirmish games out there. It differs from other games in that it has a very simplified rule set which allows for just enough sophistication to allow for reasonable battle play while allowing for quick and easy game play. The rules are so simple that children as young as 6 can play with some supervision.
There is a bit of a cult following for StarQuest (Space Crusades) despite it being out of print for decades and the availability of similarly themed and more developed games. This is likely because StarQuest (Space Crusades) is fast and easy to play. Fast and easy is good.
For information about the StarQuest (Space Crusades) rules set, see our StarQuest (Space Crusades) Rules Page.
Unit Cards are available which summarize various unit stats on and easy reference card. These can be found on our StarQuest (Space Crusades) Reference Card Page.
Expansion Games and Sequels
There are a number of 'official' expansions and sequels for StarQuest (Space Crusades) as well as fan made rules.

Miniatures
Although the heart of StarQuest (Space Crusades) is the rules set, it's the miniature which really bring the game to life. And luckily, even with StarQuest (Space Crusades) being out of print, there are plenty of excellent replacement options.
See our StarQuest (Space Crusades) Miniatures Page for more on Miniatures.
Game Boards
You will need a game surface to play on. The original StarQuest (Space Crusades) game came with 4 boards measuring 12 inches by 12 inches. These can be individually rotated and positioned in many different configurations. In fact, these four boards can be arranged in over a thousand different ways with them an a 2 x 2 square. If you add other boards and get a little creative with your setup and you can create all sorts of setups.
See our StarQuest (Space Crusades) Game Boards Page for more on Game Boards.
Hulk Structures (Walls and Doors)
Being able to open and close doors adds a level of suspense when you are clearing rooms. You can't just lob a grenade into an adjacent room then run is and shoot everything when the door is closed. You have to walk up to the door and open it and who knows what is going to jump out at you from the other side!
See our StarQuest (Space Crusades) Structures Page for more on Hulk Structures.
Game Cards
Game cards add a lot of flavor to game play, particularly the wayStarQuest (Space Crusades) uses cards.
See our StarQuest (Space Crusades) Game Cards Page for more on Game Cards.
Blips and Reinforcement Tokens
This adds a level of unknown to the game. Blips allow the Space Marine player to be aware of 'life forms' on board the ship, much like using the scanners in the movie Aliens. Knowing that there are 5 'things' on the other side of a wall and that they are moving towards you can make life very interesting. In StarQuest (Space Crusades), small double sided squares are used to represent the position of 'Blips' on the ship. A blip can be a small Gretchen, a genestealer, a dreadnought, or even just a decoy! Once a play gets in line of sight of a 'Blip' the identity of the blip is revealed and game play gets interesting.
See our StarQuest (Space Crusades) Blips Page for more on Blips.
Game Tokens
Tokens can be used to keep track of victories and rank.
See our StarQuest (Space Crusades) Tokens Page for more on Tokens.
Game Consoles
A Game Console can allow for easy referencing of your unit's stats.
See our StarQuest (Space Crusades) Reference Card Page for more on Game Consoles.
Dice
You have to have special dice to play StarQuest (Space Crusades). Included with the gamer were 6 special dice. Two are red and four are white. The whites have a '1' on a single side and a '2' on a single side, while the other sides have a target with a '0' to represent a miss. The red ones have a '1' on a single side and a '2' on a single side like the white ones as well as '3' on a single side, while the other sides have a target with a '0' to represent a miss. The red dice are more likely to produce a hit and is able to hit with a 3.
Luckily, you can still play StarQuest (Space Crusades) without the original dice. See our StarQuest (Space Crusades) Dice Page for more on Dice.

StarQuest Online was a massively multiplayer online role playing game taking place in a large universe. It was created by Castle Thorn Software. In 2009 NeXeon Technologies partnered with Castle Thorn to support development of the game,[1] but in mid-2014 NeXeon announced they would shut down the game server due to severe population decline.[citation needed] The game created a tight-knit gaming community of around 50 people aged between 12-60 which continues today.
Description[edit]
The game was set in the 23rd century whereby the players undertake the one of several roles across four playable factions. The player is set on a ship on their own, or with several other real players from around the world, and take the role aboard a starship such as the Helmsman, Tactical Officer or even the Captain of the ship. The player can walk around the ship as one of five races depending on their faction and customize the ship to their liking. The ships can then partake in combat with the NPC Pirate faction, or in PvP with other factions or player pirates.
The game itself is an online persistent sandbox where there anything can happen at any time. A hostile player ship can sneak up on another player and attack at any time, in any solar system. Typically combat takes place in the vast endless plane of 'Hyperspace' the method used to travel between star systems. When the player logs off, the world still develops, civilians will still have their colonies growing, ships will still fly towards a destination while offline, and players can still be attacked if their ship is moving.
There are over 17,000 star systems in StarQuest Online, and approximately 100,000 individual planets. Star positions were taken from Hipparcossatellite data for positional accuracy[citation needed]. Each planet was then created using a stellar dust accretion program based on the mass of each star. There are over 150 non-player character (NPC) races, and many other alien creatures inhabiting these worlds. Players can choose from three unique races when creating their characters. Several different classes of starships are available for players to command, explore, and battle with[specify].
Main bridge of UAS starship.
StarQuest Online went live on September 21, 2007 after more than two years of beta testing. After a free thirty-day trial period, players are required to pay a fee of $9.99 per month.[2]
Gameplay and game dynamics[edit]
Players were able to do things like command ships, and set up colonies. There are no pre-programmed game environments, and no instance dungeons. Therefore, actions, victories, or colonies set up by players will remain, and affect game outcomes.
StarQuest Online was one of the only space-based MMORPG [3] where individual players can work together as crewmen on the same vessel, operating different control stations on the bridge.
Administrators provide some scripted missions. However, players are fully able to create their own organizations, colonies and other structures within the game. The main organization within the games is the United Systems Alliance, which is the 'official' player organization. Players may choose to create characters which are independent of the Alliance, but several alien empires are fully controlled by non-player characters.
Starships require several players to function. Almost all starships have a real-world schedule to function, and cannot be used at all without at least one of the players present who serves as a senior officer in the game. Exception to this rule is civilian owned shipping which may by its nature vary a great degree.
